 Windows 8 Reviewed

Windows 8 is here and looking around the various forums it seems that there are very widely differing and very mixed feelings about it, depending on whether you are a corporate or domestic customer.

Some people are saying they absolutely love it and will go out of their way to recommend it, whilst others feel that Microsoft have in made a retrograde step. Only time and no doubt numerous updates will tell and decide who is right.

It seems that many corporate customers have only very recently upgraded from XP to Windows 7. This is a testament to just how good XP was. With more and more Operating Systems available, some of which are free, it might look like Microsoft's dominance in this sector could well be over.

Lets get to the point. Windows 8 is primarily designed to run on tablet devices and has been designed to compete with Apple's iPad and Google's range of Android devices. Microsoft, a late entrant into the tablet market, seems to have put this first rather than the faithful desktop users on which they built their reputation.

As a Computer Repair Business based in Warwickshire UK we think that in releasing Windows 8 so quickly after Windows 7, Microsoft are rushing into the tablet market and forgetting their desktop users. They have tried to shoehorn tablet users and desktop users together. Whether this is a good move for Microsoft is yet to be seen.

The first thing to notice is the new user touch style interface, We cannot quite see the point in having this new interface if you do not have a touch screen. Most people probably will not have a touch screen and will either be forced to upgrade their hardware in order to see the full benefits of Windows 8.

This begs the question Why did Microsoft not create a version for touchscreens and a version for traditional desktop users. Most corporate customers are probably not going to go to the expense of giving all their users touch screens, so soon after upgrading to Windows 7.

The boxes, sorry "tiles" on the front screen are great for touchscreen users but pretty meaningless if you use a conventional mouse. The main thing to remember is that the Windows key will always return you to this screen, while the desktop tile will take you to the familiar desktop.

FRESH WINDOWS 8 INSTALLATION

When Windows 8 is first installed you are forced to login using an email address although you can revert back to a local user account afterwards. Why this would be is anyone's guess and seems pretty pointless.
It also appears that you cannot import a user account form your old machine. You are forced to create a new one from scratch.

Some people are saying that the new interface is designed for non computer literate people. If you have been using Windows for years this might come as a bit of a shock to your system.

Once again Microsoft have hidden things like the control panel and the shutdown options. Touching or clicking the far right corner of the screen brings up a "settings" menu from where you then have to click "Power" and then "Shutdown". Alternatively you could use "ALT + F4" or the "Windows key+ I"

It's far too early to say how successful Windows 8 will be except to say that it might not run on some older processors

Is your System Builder Doing Things Correctly ?

Kenilworth Computer Repairs Mobile Computer Maintenance, Repair, and I.T Desktop Support Services for Kenilworth, Warwick, Royal Leamington Spa, Rugby, Stratford on Avon, Coventry, Solihull and environs

This week Computer Solutions would like to draw your attention to small scale system builders. The vast majority of which, including ourselves are doing things correctly in terms of Microsoft software licensing etc.

Today Computer Solutions were called out to a regular customer of ours in Baginton, near Coventry. The customer had had his system built for him about two years ago and it is based on an Intel Dual Core G620 processor. This is an entry level system.

Recently there had been a series of regular power cuts in the Baginton area and this had caused some errors on the computer's hard drive, preventing it from starting up correctly. The machine was installed with Windows 7 Ultimate, although it was not connected to a domain and was just used for normal everyday work.

We had previously mentioned to the customer in the past that the computer did not appear to have a licence sticker on the machine at all. This is usually located on the top or the side of the machine and indicates that an OEM (Original Equipment Manufacturer) software licence had been supplied with the machine.

In other words the customer has paid for a licence to use the Microsoft Operating System, when they purchased the machine. Small scale builders should supply both a disk and a licence which is attached to the machine at the time of the build. However there are a few who for whatever reason do not follow the rules.

Initially the machine could not be restored using the built in system recovery tools, although we did manage to resolve this.
Closer inspection revealed that the software fitted could well have been a counterfeit version as it did not appear to have been activated. Activation is the process of letting the Mictrosoft Licensing Server know about the new installation.

It appears that there is or was a 'hack' which allowed Windows 7 to be used without being activated. Normally activation should take place automatically once the machine goes online.

We think the company responsible for this is called Communikom, who were previously fined several thousand pounds by Microsoft for doing this previously. They have since fled to Spain and do not appear to be contactable. Our advice, should they return is to steer well clear of them. We've seen a couple of installations by them and this one seemed to bear many of their hallmarks.

The customer had no option but to purchase a valid licence for Windows 7 Ultimate from Microsoft costing £229.00, plus our time for putting things right and registering the software with the new licence correctly.

So if you are thinking of having a system built to your own custom specification please remember to ask for the licence sticker and software reinstallation disk as it will save you a lot of money later on, should you need to reinstall the Operating System.

LCD & LED Replacement Laptop, Notebook and Net book Screen Service from Computer Solutions

Kenilworth Computer Repairs Mobile Computer Maintenance, Repair, and I.T Desktop Support Services for Kenilworth, Warwick, Royal Leamington Spa, Rugby, Stratford on Avon, Coventry, Solihull and environs.

Generally speaking Laptop and notebook screens come in two varities, which are LED and LCD. Almost all screens are available in a variety of size formats and there will only be one specific to your machine. The most common laptop screen size is 15.6" when measured diagonally.

All LCD and LED panels have a backlight which is used to light the display, however there are two very different types of backlight, LED (Light Emitting Diode) and CCFL (Cold Cathode Fluorescent Light).
CCFL LCD panels will usually have two connectors, one for the image data and a pair of wires for the light itself, usually pink and white. This type are driven from an inverter in the laptop to provide the high voltage for the lamp. Computer Solutions can supply replacement inverters for many laptops.

LED backlit panels usually only have one connector as their backlight only requires low voltage. Only one specific type of screen will fit a particular laptop, notebook or netbook, We'll also replace the screen for your Apple Mac, iMac, Macbook and Macbook Pro computer. We have a rapid turnaround service and subject to stock availability, most screens can be done within 24 - 48 hours  Call us or email us for a quotation.

Computer Solutions can replace all types of screen for most laptops. Some newer laptops are starting to use the slimmer screens and there is a premium price on this particular variety. Samsung laptops are a good example of this.
Why not give the friendly teams at Computer Solutions a call to discuss your requirements today.

Beware of "No Fix No Fee" Offers !

Beware of "No Fix No Fee" Offers !

15th Feb 2012
There are a several computer repair companies who offer something called a "No-Fix No-Fee" computer repair service. This is supposed to mean that if they cannot fix it then you won't be charged and generally speaking this is true but it really depends on how you define the word "Fix".
Professional computer repair companies will usually charge an "inspection fee" to diagnose what the problem might be. This is sometimes called a "Bench Fee" and will be a minimal charge for the engineers time. Quite simply because once the problem is properly diagnosed, the customer is free to choose whether to proceed or not. Most do, but equally many choose not to to proceed.
On a "no-fix no-fee" basis the engineer is then out of pocket. and effectively provided his or her knowledge and experience for free.
There are many different types of computer problem that can be caused by a number of different things, that can occur and most people would expect to pay for diagnosis and repair. A lot of system file damage can be done by certain viruses for example.
If someone has had their computer for some time, they will probably have it looking and running exactly the way they want it. To the customer the word "Fix" means that they want their computer exactly as it was previously. They want their emails and documents in the right place and they want all their installed software working, together with all the necessary driver software.
To a lot of PC engineers the word "Fix" means "Can this computer boot Windows and does the customer still have their data ?" This does not necessarily resolve the problem that caused the error in the first place. The error will therefore most likely happen again at some other point in the future, probably when you least expect it.
A good competent PC engineer will do a couple of simple checks to try and eliminate this possibility. First they will check the date stamp on the hard drive unit itself, fitted inside the machine. If it is more than about 5-6 years old then it is probably time for it to be replaced. Hard drives being mechanical do wear out with age. They will also advise on whether repair is economically viable based on your requirements. Computer Solutions always carry out these basic checks and advise accordingly
If the problem is motherboard related then these can sometimes be repaired, although it can be expensive. and prices of new desktop motherboard's start quite low.
Laptop motherboards are however quite a different matter. This type of repair will never usually be carried out on site, as the machine will have to be dismantled and will require specialist attention.
So no-fix no-fee is really dependent on how you define the word "fix" and can the suggested repair be proven for long enough to call it a "fix".
In short be careful with "No-Fix No Fee" as your definition of a fix and your expectations may be wildly different from the service you actually receive.
As the old saying goes "There really is no such thing as a free lunch !"

AVG Mac Coming Soon

Available soon from Computer Solutions

You probably already knew that Computer Solutions are proud to be an authorized AVG Antivirus Reseller, but what you did not know is that AVG are said to be in the process of developing a product for all those Mac users specifically to run directly under Mac OS. We are told that it will be a proper DMG format application ready to run.

We have often heard Mac users say that viruses don't affect them and that this has something to do with the disk format etc etc. Unfortunately the truth is somewhat more mundane. The only reason that Mac's do not get attacked as much as PC's is quite simply that there are less Mac users and therefore it is not as lucrative for the hacker, yes folks there is money in attacking your computer !

Having said that, AVG (UK) Ltd, the top Antivirus Company with their global headquarters in Newark, Nottinghamshire are apparently in the process of releasing a version of their award winning Antivirus system for Mac users.

SEO Web Services From Computer Solutions

SEO Web Services

From Computer Solutions

Computer Solutions also specialize in S.E.O Website Optimization and Search Engine Placement. It is a sad fact that most people get a website deigned and then forget about actually promoting it.

Just designing a £99 website from a stock template will give you a "shopfront" and a few pages but on its own it is not enough, and the chances of being seen are probably pretty well zero.

Good SEO depends on a number of factors, which by themselves might be incrementally small but taken together can make a huge difference to your online presence and your search engine placement on the major search engines.

The web is a hugely competitive area, so making sure that it is YOUR website that gets noticed is vital to your success.

For a small monthly fee Computer Solutions can provide a fully featured S.E.O service including various PR, web optimization and content strategies. This will help your overall search engine ranking, on many of the popular search engines including Google.

Replacement Laptop Adapters from Computer Solutions

Replacement Laptop Adapters from
Computer Solutions

It seems that Laptop Adapters do tend to suffer quite a bit of punishment these days. If they have not overheated and failed from being left on whilst in use, then the power cables have become worn and frayed, This can lead to the battery not charging, shorting, a faulty connection or worse still a possible fire hazard.
When the laptop battery becomes worn, many people choose to use their laptop with it permanently connected to the mains, rather than purchasing a new battery.
This does two things, Firstly it heats the laptop battery, which in effect "cooks it". Lithium batteries do not like being cooked and have to be both charged and handled in a totally different way to conventional rechargable batteries.
Secondly, using the laptop in this way causes the power unit to try and deliver more charging power than it can safely do so. This will eventually cause the power unit to fail through overheating, if the battery is in poor condition.
Computer Solutions can now supply laptop power adapters for most of the popular makes of laptop including HP, Dell and Acer.
All adapters are usually available at 24 hours notice andf both compatible and original units are available. the compatible units look and work exactly the same as the original ones but represent a less expensive option.
Contact us now with your make and model of laptop for an up tyo date price and remember if you live in Warwickshire then the price includes same day delivery.
